Research Nurses Workshop

NHS NextGen are holding a one day in person workshop for research nurses in the NHS to understand, develop and practice narrative as a motivational leadership tool. The workshop is scheduled to take place on Thursday 19th January from 9:30 – 15:00 at the Royal College of Nursing in London.

Research is a pillar of nursing: a foundation upon which we base our humanity and skills. As the people who have the most patient contact our unique insight into our patients’ lived experiences becomes our unique selling point as researchers.

Yet the image of the nurse researcher is seldom the one conjured in depictions of nurses, and the stories of nurse researchers are seldom told.

A recent incident saw a PhD application being refused on the grounds that the applicant’s proposed supervisors were ‘two nurses'. These two nurses both had doctorates and had decades of research experience, brought in millions of pounds of research grants and changed healthcare, yet were apparently rejected because they are nurses.

As nurse researchers, we know how to identify and fill gaps in the literature. It’s time now that we fill gaps in our own literature: the story of us. To perpetuate a culture of nursing researchers, where nurses are recognised by all professions, including our own, as a strong hold in research. We need to start sharing our stories.

As ambassadors for nurse research, we invite you to attend a one day in person workshop where expert narrative coaches will work with you to shape can your own narrative. You will be supported to use it as a motivational leadership tool so that collectively we can ensure that research nurses are celebrated and recognised for the amazing contribution we make to healthcare advancements and ultimately, the experience of our patients.
